How Do Waste Metals Effect The Environment?

Waste materials, also commonly referred to as trash or garbage, is very detrimental to the environment. It not only poses a risk to the land, but it also poses a risk to the water and the air. Overfilled landfills crowd land that can be used for other means, and it takes a long time for the land to regain the nutrients that are lost when it is used as dumping area.

Sewer water can kill fish and other ocean life when it is poured into the rivers, streams and creeks. Car emissions limit the amount of fresh air available for human, animal and plant life to breathe in. These are just of the reasons why waste materials can have a harmful impact on the environment.

The Different Types Of Waste Disposal

The main reason why waste materials are so harmful is due to the manner in which they are disposed of. Some of the most common ways that are used for disposal includes:

• Recycling
• Composting
• Landfills
• Hazardous material disposal site
• Incineration

Recycling

Recycling is considered a cost effective way to get of certain waste materials such as paper, plastic and scraps of metal. It does not take as much energy to create a new item of a recycled item as it does to create a new item out of new materials.

Composting

Composting is a way to get rid of waste materials such as food scraps, untreated paper and plastic that is biodegradable. It is also considered cost effective because you can simply dig a hole and bury these items into the ground. Your gardens and plant life will have nutrient rich soil to grow in. This is a safe way to dispose of certain types of waste materials.

Hazardous Materials Disposal Site

It is critical that hazardous materials are properly disposed of. Using an approved disposal site will help you get rid of materials that would otherwise cause contamination such as a centrifuge cleaning and maintenance plant. Examples of these types of materials are:

• Used paint cans
• Bleach
• Used oil
• Syringes and other dangerous medical supplies/equipment

Landfills

Although most people recycle, compost and use other methods of waste disposal, they still practice unsafe ways of getting rid of their trash. They use landfills, and they can have both a negative and positive effect on the environment. Packed trash releases methane that can be used for electricity, but a methane leak can contaminate water.

Incineration

This process burns waste and produces steam at the same time. Once again, this can be positive and negative. Even though landfills are not being filled, the incineration process does contribute to air pollution.

Waste materials can damage the environment. Look for ways that you can decrease the amount of waste your home produces so you can help the environment.
